When should you resize an image?
Resizing is useful when an image is much larger than the space where it will be displayed. A 4000-pixel photo may be unnecessary for a small profile image, form upload or website card.
How to choose dimensions
If the destination gives you a maximum width, enter that width and leave the height blank to preserve the source proportions. If both dimensions are required, check the result carefully because forcing a different aspect ratio can change the shape of the image.
Resize vs. compress
Resizing changes pixel dimensions. Compression changes how efficiently those pixels are encoded. Combining a sensible dimension with appropriate compression can produce a much smaller file without unnecessary quality loss.
Common examples
- Website images: resize to the maximum display width instead of uploading an oversized original.
- Forms and applications: follow the destination's stated pixel and file-size limits.
- Thumbnails: use dimensions appropriate for the thumbnail rather than the full-resolution source.
